In addition, she helped her Trojans get to the Final Four. Her sophomore year was the time she was devastated by a personal setback, but she was able to make it back as an All-American. Ross was awarded the Honda Sports Award 2003-04 for the top female NCAA player. Ross had been an international studies major at USC. Margie Ross wasn't able to watch her daughter's climb to the beach volleyball spotlight. Ross suffered the loss of her mother to breast cancer in the year 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. In the aftermath, Ross remains close to her deceased parent. Margie has inspired her both in her personal life and at the beaches.
